Are You Serious About Getting Things Done?

Posted by Paul Morales as Business Productivity, Personal Development

getting-things-doneI just read this motivational post Do It Now by Steve Pavlina. He basically challenged himself to graduate college in 3 semesters. That’s 1 and 1/2 year about.

He was taking 30-40 units per semester, when an average student took 12-15 units. His schedule is crazy, 30-40 units, sleeping 8 hours a day, exercised for 30mins every morning and even working a 40 hour job as a game programmer. You can read about why he did what he did here The Meaning of Life: Intro. He’s got a great blog, everyone should check it out.

Here are some tips he talks about that are very important.

Knowing What You WANT

You need to know exactly what you want in your life. By knowing all your goals, you can further plan on your strategy to accomplish each and every goal.

While working all you REALLY want to think about is your END goal. The reason being is you want to always remind yourself the reason why you are putting in all your effort for something. If you don’t know why you are doing what you are doing. You won’t stick to your goal.

Become Flexible and Adapt

I think this is a very good skill. You need to be able to pick up and adapt from whatever position you end up on. You just have to master getting everything done and looking what’s next on your list and get that done too.

He mention’s a good analogy says an airplane is always off course 90% of time but it always gets to the destination. That’s because it knows it’s goals and it makes the necessary corrections to be in align with their goal.

One Task At A Time

Use a simple to-do list with all the things that need to get done. I would organize them in similar categories. Once you start a task, you start to finish. You want to get it done as soon as possible.

You want enough time to concentrate, focus and finish a project. There is a downtime when you have to re-understand what you are doing with a whole new project. Once your done, it’s easy for your brain to turn off about that subject because you don’t have anything needing to be done. You don’t want to confuse yourself or clutter your mind.

Accepting Mistakes and Failures

I highly agree with this one, just recently too. Most people are afraid of failure or making mistakes. I think everyone should enjoy their mistakes and failures. It works as a guide to show us how far we have gotten or how close we are to our goal. Those who are successful, failed just about as many times. For myself, I don’t count my failures.

Failure is part of becoming successful and people won’t remember your failures when you become successful. Thomas Edison FAILED 10,000 before making the light bulb now That’s CRAZY!

I’ve re-framed it in my eyes, I either succeed or I learn more on how to get closer to my goal. Either way, I WIN ;)

Get It DONE!

I just learned something new today! W. Clement Stone said to his workers, “When you get lazy, Say DO IT NOW!” and do it. I like his 60 second rule that’s a good way of putting it. I’ve never thought about it that way. I usually just pick what I’m doing and get started right away. You shouldn’t waste any time on actually thinking of what to do, look at your list and get it done. It takes like 2-3 seconds to do that not 15 or 30 mins.

Managing Your Time Effectively

Don’t Waste No Time – Don’t waste time and be unproductive when time can be better spent on something more important. If you have 20 mins free don’t watch TV, instead do something that would take 20mins.

Work All The Time – When you aren’t doing anything, start working.

Experiment With Time – Experiment with your time and yourself. Figure out how best you work, If you get stuck and need to refresh start something else then go back after you finish that task.

It’s always best to know what you want and keep everything simple as possible and just start acting. I hope this article helped. Leave some comments if you have any suggestions!
